# Sources and required citation

California parcel geometry is a public record under the California Public
Records Act, and this distribution republishes county-authored parcel
geometry on that basis (*Sierra Club v. Superior Court (Orange County)*,
2013). **Citation is the condition on which it is republished, so it is
not optional.** Any onward use of these files must name the county as
author, with the endpoint and retrieval date below.

Where a county's data is served through a third-party host -- Kings via an
Esri-hosted proxy, Fresno via the Fresno COG regional view -- the record is
still the county's. Cite the county, not the host.

The licence column reports what each publisher *states*, not a conclusion
drawn about it. Several counties publish nothing, and that is recorded as
found rather than filled in.
